ABMikroNaNo R&D Building is located on a high sloped site where the Bilkent University and Cyberpark campuses meet at intertwined boundaries. Designed for research in nanotechnology, much needed spacious clean rooms of the building are located at lower floors, forming a travertine clad base bridging the edges of the parcel. Main entrance to offices and technical entrance to clean rooms are positioned at different floors of opposite facades of the base. Laboratory and office floors above emerge with setbacks from the base, shaping the perception of final form in tune with the movement along the main road and the neighboring NANOTAM headquarters. Two buildings together define the western edge of the educational building agglomeration of Bilkent University. Therefore, the building image does not only legitimize itself but also support its context. With such respect, the project interprets textures and colors in vicinity in a subtle and contemporary fashion; materializing them into functional and universal architecture, which also fulfils the innovative nature of research and development. Such interpretation produces youthful, dynamic and optimistic spaces, in tune with the on-campus location.
