The project located at a very central location in Ankara, enjoys a site with a solid presence in the collective urban memory. With first degree protection status defined by the Regional Board of Preservation of Cultural and Natural Assets, the existing buildings at the site had solid technical requirements for refurbishment proposals and therefore were only allowed for limited alteration in external appearance. On the other hand, the campus program asking for very dense usage within the building envelope required extensive and durable physical infrastructure to cater for demands of educational, social, cultural, administrative and technical units of various sizes. Limited alteration allowance caused existing structural frame to be virtually insufficient to offer spaces with higher spans, such as large lecture halls and cultural facilities.
